Philosophy of Love I. Introduction A. State and explain the purpose of the paper. The purpose of this paper is to define love beyond the general understanding. I plan to incorporate the views of Socrates, Schropenhauer, Nietzche, and Allen to reach a conclusion of love being something that detaches from the self. Touching on the fact that there is reason in love. Because it is complex does not mean it is not explainable. Themes that will radiate in my essay will be reason in love, relational ontology (loving everything because God dwells in them), and what model love is. Structure the essay in a way that lists the authors different positions and definitions on love. 1. Define all of the technical terms in the paper topic/question B. State and explain the philosophical problem C. State what your conclusion will be. II. Explanation of Position One. (The First Philosopher) A. Summarize the position in the philosopher’s words. (In Socrates' view, love refers to being pleased by something that is morally right) 1. Define all terms. 2. Explain these terms and the basic position in your own words. 3. Include quotes. B. Offer an overview of the position in your words. III. Explanation of Position Two. (The Second Philosopher) A. Summarize the position in the philosopher’s words. 1. Define all terms. 2. Explain these terms and basic position in your own words. 3. Include quotes. B. Offer an overview of the position in your words. IV. Compare and Contrast the two positions. A. Identify common themes. 1. Point out stylistic or historical differences. 2. Point out where two different words actually mean the same thing and where two of the same words have different meanings. B. Compare conclusions. 1. Point out how conclusions differ and how they are the same. V. Pick your position and defend it. A. State which position you agree with.
