As stated by DeSimone (2011), "Teacher professional development is one of the keys to improving the quality of U.S. schools. Many education reforms rely on teacher learning— and the improved instruction that ideally follows — to increase student learning, so understanding what makes professional development effective is critical to understanding
Test-taking, career-oriented, learning behavior, decision-making, and critical thinking are all areas in which I have strengths. I was able to apply this to my theory through the way in which class is conducted, and the students are assessed. DI and inclusion push for children to embrace their learning behavior and styles while helping them develop deeper thinking processes. Creating success and higher levels of thinking allow children to become goal orientated which will help them when it is time to choose career paths of their own. In my theory, an effective teacher must also be willing to change and adapt lesson plans based on the needs of the students.
It is almost as if students have a mind set that their life has to be a certain way because of the lives of their family members before them and this is simply not true. I do plan to become a teacher so I know that this is a problem that I will have to face and that I will have to deal with students suffering from generational poverty throughout my entire career. I do believe there are ways to help the children overcome this. One way that I would help the children is to help them see and realize the value of their own life and their own education. I would help the child to see that just because their parents and grandparents are education to a certain extent, doesn’t mean that’s how it has to be for them.
They are mentors to their children that their quest is to lead their child to success. Hopefully if the child receives that type of support and guidance in their life, they will use it in the long run for their own good. The reason why I bring this up is because I believe that this is an important factor to the cause of what is happening to the public school system. Students need to be on the same pace as the teachers to receive positive outcomes for both sides. The public school system should actually study and listen to the students to gain ideas on how they can reverse the direction of where the public school system is heading.
Wayson also spoke about teacher student relations and how to open your classroom for more effective learning. He talked about not embarrassing a student, but in turn seeking alternate ways of getting your message across. This is something that we have touched on throughout the course, but something I feel to be very important. I think its imperative that as teachers we think about what our actions have the power to do. At the elementary level, we are shaping how students feel about themselves which can affect them the rest of their lives.
In conclusion, a multicultural classroom requires various teaching methods for students’ success. In order to successfully teach a class like such, teaching materials must be modified to involve and recognize each student’s culture. When a teacher shows interest in student’s heritage and culture, they are able to gain their students trust. This encourages and motivates students to learn in a diverse
Current Issues Summary and Response Matt 12/12/2010 Intro As a future special education teacher one of my jobs will be to keep up-to-date on current issues in the education field and let my parents know about any helpful development on these current issues. It is important for teachers to keep tabs on new developments that could be useful to better their understanding of education as a whole. There are a plethora of current issues involving special education. These issues range from more controversial to less controversial. Some of the more controversial issues are the use of tests to place students into special education, how should we grade students with special needs and how to discipline a student who is in special education.
I would want to have done the same things once I have my own classroom and I feel fairly passionate for students to understand and develop tolerance towards people who may be different than themselves. I feel that as teachers, we can take action to really mold our students to grow and be better individuals living in this world. I really do believe that issues in the matter of race/ethnicity and culture has to do with educating oneself of these things and practicing the basic matters a person should carry with themselves. I really think that these issues need to be discussed in depth when students are young and continuously because it is harder for one’s mind to see the wrong in something they believed was right for most of their
By basing knowledge on how children develop and learn, it can help make more developmentally appropriate activities. The children would learn more, and you would be more successful as a teacher. *Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family. We have age limits and restriction on many things, but why does are education system expect these young kids to make the right choices, ask for help and develop good study habits on their own. Our education system needs a new approach to resolve these issues. Teachers and parents need to be held responsible, for how well these kids do in school. We need come up with a new plan so these students aren’t left lost and helpless. Flunking students can be used as a positive tool by our education system.
