On Good Friday of Easter a violent recreation of Jesus’ crucifixion was re-enacted by 24 Northern Philippine villagers. As the gruesome ritual takes place a crowd of millions of people come from all over the Philippine’s to witness this gruesome event. Susan Wen reporting Crucifixions is an annual event in the Philippine’s during Easter. This ritual is accompanied by thousands of spectators and the volunteers who have willingly chosen to be crucified like Jesus, to commit self flagellation and to carry large wooden crosses on their backs as they journey through the street. Predominantly Catholic Pampanga province in northern Philippines plays host to this extreme display of religious devotion in rites is frowned upon by church leaders who are opposing to this ritual saying they want a less violent ceremony. “I think it is absolutely wonderful to have people who are inspired and devoted to being a catholic, but there is a difference between being religious and loving God to believing that self mutilating themself is redemption for their sins. I am full Filipino and even I can’t understand why this is still an opportunity that people can take believing that this is showing their affection to God and that their sins will be fully cleansed”, Marilyn said. I think these extreme acts of torture is what the volunteer believes will atone for their sins, they feel that in accomplishing this they have done something amazing in their lives and that this makes them a more strong catholic believer. I think that this is not what Easter is about, Easter is about being gathered together to feast and remember when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the last supper.
