THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF “DEAD SPACE” Dead Space is a Sci-Fi/ Survival/ Thriller video game series and franchise created by Glen Schofield, developed by Visceral Games and published by EA (Electronic Arts) Games. So far, the franchise had published Dead Space: Extraction and Dead Space: Ignition. Dead Space 2 recently came out last January 25, 2010, which is the continuation of the main storyline in Dead Space. Dead Space’s popularity and plotline had resulted two animated movies: Dead Space: Downfall and Dead Space: Aftermath. There are also graphic novels published: Dead Space: Martyr and Dead Space: Salvaged. The game is rated M, meaning for players 18 years and above or just mature enough to handle the grotesque and gory moments the game has to offer. Unlike the usual RPG (Role-Playing Games) and Action/ Adventure Games, the game has a “Real-Time Environment”, meaning that checking your inventory, buying some stuff in a store or even saving your game won’t cut you out from an enemy attack. Furthermore, the game has a method called “Strategic Dismemberment” wherein just blasting away at an enemy won’t defeat it. You must cut off certain appendages to be able to keep the enemy from spreading any more infestation to make more enemies around your environment. The plot takes place in the year 2508, a time where the planet Earth is now barren and people now live in Space Stations outside Earth. The people have mastered technology and is now able to upgrade space suits to have life-support and a holographic telecommunications system. The main protagonist is Isaac Clarke, a systems engineer sent with a maintenance crew in USG Kellion to investigate the current state of an abandoned mining space ship, USG Ishimura.
