PESA Speech Draft Buying Pets on Impulse Abandonment of pets has been on the rise in recent years in Singapore. Every month, the SPCA takes in up to 400 abandoned or unwanted pets. Good Afternoon\Evening, my name is Melva Lee from Compassvale Secondary School and today I’ll be talking about “Buying Pets on Impulse”. Most pets that are bought on impulse are cute and cuddly such as Guinea pigs, rabbits or even puppies. After a few weeks or even days, these pets end up being emotional purchases that usually end in the abandonment of the animal. By purchasing a pet on impulse you may not know what exactly you are getting into with care expenses such as vet bills. You can buy an aquatic turtle for twenty dollars but do you know that for a proper setup and it can add up to four hundred dollars? My family has a pet dog, who is11 years old. The responsibility of taking care of it is immense. My brother and I have to bring him for walks every morning and night and my parents have to pay a huge amount of money for his grooming service and vet bills. My father had gave my mum the puppy for her birthday, little did she know that she had to pay a whole lot of attention to it! I always suggest try to talk to a friend with a similar animal that they want, or visit their local pet stores or shelters to try to get more accustomed with the animal. It is also very good to do research via the internet or library on the specific type of pet you are considering before actually going and purchasing that pet. When you have researched and have been accustomed with the pet, I would say go ahead and buy your pet. Just remember that a pet is a lifelong commitment so always thinks twice before
