Our Pets as Companions Linda R. University of Phoenix Imagine a best friend who is always on your side. It would be so refreshing to have a friend who does not care how much you earn in a year. An acquaintance who will not mention the few extra pounds you put on during the holidays. When you become a pet owner, you get a loyal companion who, with a little attention, will spend their days adoring you. The relationship between pets and their owners is a special one. It is a bond that can exist for many years. Not many friends are as faithful as the animals chosen for pets. Pet ownership is a serious responsibility, but they are companions that help improve mental health while becoming one of the family. Though many may consider them only animals, a pet is beneficial as a companion and a friend. Deciding to adopt an animal is a major responsibility requiring careful consideration. A caring owner understands that pets not only require care but also medical attention. Yearly vaccinations and other recurring medical expenses can range from $160 for a cat to $260 for a large dog. (ASPCA, 2011). Daily feeding and water are necessary to keep the pet healthy. Also the animal benefits from exercise on a regular basis. According to the ASPCA, it takes $150 annually feed a canine while feeding a feline costs $145 a year. (ASPCA, 2011). The first year of pet ownership can cost $1070-$1260. This amount includes vaccinations, toys and treats, and veterinary visits. Before bringing home your furry companion, it is important to examine the financial and physical necessities of pet ownership. Grooming for your pet and kenneling them when you travel are additional costs to be added to the family’s budget. Often it is underestimated how quickly these incidentals add up.
