It was determined in 1983 the airport needed to be expanded and ground was broken in 1989 for what is now DIA. The plan was to make DIA the most efficient airport in the world, but it was not until 1992 the decision was made to have a fully integrated baggage system. BAE already had a contract with United at the time to handle their baggage service but after some deliberation, they were convinced they could expand the system to the whole airport. BAE touted it as the “most complex automated baggage system ever built.” In retrospect, senior leadership at BAE should have never let this leave the drawing board for a number of reasons. The senior leadership at BAE failed to calculate the total risk of taking on a project of this scope.
Nathan Higley Period 3 August 21, 2012 AP European Extra Credit Brunelleschi’s Dome The thesis of the book Brunelleschi’s Dome by Ross King is that the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore built by Filippo Brunelleschi at the time was the biggest and most magnificent dome ever built and to this day no one has built a dome quite like it. The cathedral took over a century to build, Filippo worked on it for a quarter of that time all on the dome. He came up with all new machines and architectural ideas to help achieve this grand feat. One of his ideas was building the dome without wooden centering which was unheard of at the time. The dome was so massive that no one believed he could build it without centering.

Humanities 101 25 July, 2015 The Parthenon High above the city of Athens sets the Parthenon. Although it is simple in structure, the wonderful artistry of this structure impacted classical architecture and still influences structures to this day. The Parthenon was built to house a grand, gold and ivory statue of the goddess Athena. Temples traditionally were to only be viewed from the outside (The Parthenon); the Doric style columns often interrupted the view of the temples. It was the largest Doric Greek temple but also used the Ionic temple styles (Ancient History).
There were established standards for efficient construction: for steel 3 1/2 stories per week; for brick walls, a story a day; and for stonework, one to two stories a week. 1929 Starret Brothers and Eken had maintained a fast pace in the erection of the Manhattan Company building at 40 Wall Street. But as Paul Starret explained in his autobiography: ” it was clear to us at once that the Empire State could never finish the building on time by any such progress. We decided to discard all these plans of operations and determined to erect the Empire State at the rate of a story a day”. In addition to the steel frame, construction materials included 62,000 cubic yards of concrete; 200,000 cubic feet of Indiana limestone and granite, which comprised most of the exterior; 10,000 square feet of Rose Famosa and Estrallante marble; 6,500 windows, whose spandrels were sandblasted to blend their color into the tone of the windows; and 300,000 square feet of Hauteville and Rocheron marble for the elevator lobbies and the corridors on the office floors The Empire State Building is an office building.
Blue Tower is probably one of Chihuly’s greatest accomplishments. It is the tallest piece he has ever created and probably the tallest glass piece in the world. It stands forty-seven feet high and is 6 feet in diameter. It uses two-thousand pieces of glass it descends twenty feet into the archeological substructure of the Citadel. The tower starts off as a deep cobalt blue at the top and fades to a lighter blue which hints at the sky color changing throughout the day.

Perhaps this is why skyscrapers are such a tourist attraction to Americans. The Chrysler Building was at one point the tallest skyscraper known to man, the proudest achievement of American architects and citizens of America. The American Radiator Building used to be an office tower for the American Radiator Company, but was reopened as a hotel in 2001. This is the reason it is such a popular destination for travelers. It also represents the economic changes of New York.
The bell tower was built in 1990 and stands 236 feet tall and is one of Orange County's tallest structures (Crystal, 2011). It was built from a polished, mirrored quality, stainless steel prisms forming a spectacular spire which catches the light from all directions and houses a 52-bell carillon (Crystal, 2011). From the outside the cathedral is very smooth and contemporary. Inside the cathedral you can see the high arches and ceilings and the bell tower completes the gothic
