Most people would agree that owning a pet is a wonderful experience. However, some pets require a lot of care. Dogs bark and chew up shoes and hamsters can escape from their cages and be found two weeks later, slightly decomposed, at the back of a book shelf. Cats, on the other hand, are “low-maintenance” animals. Cats make the best pets. They are independent, clean animals who are never loud and disruptive. First of all, cats are independent. Unlike dogs, cats can be left alone for long periods of time. They don’t need to be let outside to relieve themselves. As long as they have enough food and water in their dish, they eat when they need to eat. As well, cats do not need constant attention from humans. They are affectionate only when they feel like being affectionate. This independent streak makes cats the best pets. Cats are also very clean animals. Their waste is contained in a litter box that is easy to clean. Also, they bathe themselves very effectively with their own saliva, unlike dogs that need their owners to bathe them. Most importantly, cats do not slobber. Slobbering is particularly disgusting with affectionate dogs who want to lick their owners’ faces. The fact that cats are such clean animals does indeed make them the best pets. Lastly, cats are not loud or disruptive. They do not bark or chirp hysterically when people come to the door. On the contrary, the noises cats make are soft and soothing to the ear. As well, owners usually do not have to worry about their cat attacking the postal worker. Moreover, whereas a dog will often jump up at a guest, the most a cat will do is rub up against a guest’s leg. Therefore, the sweet disposition of a cat clearly makes it the best pet.
