INTRO Red, Green, Yellow, Orange, Aromatic, Fresh, Beautiful and Delicious. These are some of the words used to describe home grown fruits and vegetables. Nothing could substitute the satisfaction for the stomach or the soul that gardening brings. Think of all the fresh food you like to make at home: soup, salad, jam, sauce and adding herbs to your favorite recipes. What sort of fond memories do you have of eating a favorite meal with family? Now think about your fruit and vegetables you buy from the store; how would describe them and do you have any fond memories of them? I try and think of the expensive things I get at the store like tomatoes when planning my garden. So this year I went with two different tomatoes, a pepper, garlic, potato, and some strawberries. I have a compost pile that I keep to put all the scraps from the house in to help the soil stay nutrient rich. It also cuts down on our garbage. VISUALIZE Remember earlier when I spoke of the 5 benefits of gardening? One of those was exercise. Depending on what you’re doing in your garden you are usually doing a lot of bending and digging so you are using some different muscle groups and increasing your flexibility. This becomes more important as we age. Another is stress relief. You can forget about your daily grind and think about your plants. The average American goes to the store 1.7 times a week. Of those 1.7 times the average person spends around $50 a week. Having a garden can cut down on those trips and that weekly cost, giving you more free time and money which reduces stress. Creativity is needed when starting a garden. What are you going to plant? Where are you going to put it or arrange it? Gardening involves conceptual thinking. You have to see it in your mind before you put it in the ground.
