Essay 2 The Poverty Point Mound Builders Elizabeth Caudill His 151 M/w 6-8 The sort of life that the poverty point experienced was, in my opinion a very small community of people. They worked very hard to find the items they needed to make the Jasper bead. The poverty point people survived by hunting, and fishing. The kind of animals they were able to hunt was turkey, duck, deer, and rabbit. (R=LOCKLARD 2011 SECOND EDITION PG.88). They also, fished with spears which they caught bass, catfish, alligator, and clams. (R=Locklard2011 second edition pg88). The women were expected to pretty much collect the side items for supper. Things the women collected were acorns, nuts, wild grapes, sunflower seeds, squash and gourds. (R=Lock lard 2011 second edition pg88). The experience of life the poverty point people experienced were they didn’t have to worry about things. Life was much simpler then. But also, I’m sure to them it seemed stressful trying to figure out how your going to get dinner for the day and if there is going to be enough for everyone. The role the poverty point people played in religion was not very big. They believed in medicine men or women and witches. They had stone engravings with symbolic significance. Some of the engravings were “Fox-Man” and “Long-Tail” as well as duck foot and bird figurines. The “Fox-Man” design is probably a stylized horned owl, and the “Long-Tail” may represent an opossum. (R=Louisiana archaeology poverty point trade and symbols). The animals are believed to represent myths and lore of southeastern Indians. The ability of these animals is flight, night vision, and alertness. People believe their religion was called Animism, which is a belief system that sees the world as being full of spirits and power.
