There are so many things we Americans worry about these days. Our mortgage rates, retirement options and health insurance are at the forefront of our minds when trying to allocate funds and make sound financial decisions. While these are all topics that deserve effort on our part, I believe we don’t take enough time to focus on ourselves and our families and the time it takes to do just that: focus on something other than work and what ‘work’ will award us. It’s ironic that we are so willing to do whatever it takes to earn time or dues from our jobs but conveniently fail to use some of these rewards. Due to a myriad of reasons, our nation has stopped rewarding themselves with time off. In fact, according to CNN, in 2010 Americans gave up $67 billion worth in vacation days. This economy has made vacation a non option for many people who are fearful of losing a job or need a surplus of cash to go in an emergency fund. Employees just can’t risk leaving work for a week for fear that the workload will pile up while away and be insurmountable upon return. In many countries in Europe, vacation days are mandatory and are provided by employers by law. I feel that while seeming trivial, our politicians would do well to raise this subject on our behalf. If you provide workers with a safety net and guilt free time off, they will have a chance to recharge and be more productive for it. Instead, our system provides a menial window of time and then guilt’s you into giving it up. Other than politicians standing on soap boxes and demanding more vacation time in an age when there are deficits and war, it is up to the people to advocate for themselves. You earned time, so use it! People need to sit back and realize that time goes so quickly and can leave you with regret.
