GUN CONTROL IN AMERICA
Instructor: John Cantlon
Are gun laws in the United States strict enough to keep our community and children safe? By now everyone is familiar with the recent school and university shootings all around our country and even around the world. These events have affected our community, schools and children dramatically in the past 15 years. Most school districts around the country have hired more Police Officers and have increased their security in order to fight this new trend of violence that seems to be getting more popular by people with mental illness or personal vengeance.
One of the most remembered and tragic school shootings that started this tragic trend around the country was the “Columbine School shooting” on April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School in Columbine, located in Jefferson County in the State of Colorado. This was a highly planed and complex attack that involved a fire bomb to divert firefighters, propane tanks that were converted to bombs that were placed in the cafeteria, bombs rigged in cars, and 99 explosive devices. This attack was planned and carried by 2 students, Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold. Total of 12 students and 1 teacher were murdered during this attack that took place on the campus of the school. They also injured 27additional students during this attack. The two suspects later committed suicide. This attack was considered one of the deadliest mass murders committed on an American high school campus until the Virginia Tech shooting in April 16, 2007. These incidents sparked debate over gun control laws, and the availability of firearms to public within the United States. Also, gun violence involving juveniles is one of the current topics on daily news and television. All these incidents made the American public realize the problem with our gun laws and the lack of school safety around the country....
