In order to come to a conclusion or a diagnosis of a particular type of disorder or mental issue, the psychologist and/or psychiatrist needs to figure out a way to test the client. A variety of assessment means are developed for this purpose, and they would need to use most if not all of the variety to come to an accurate diagnosis. The tests must possess two important characteristics. One is reliability, or consistency of measure, and the other is validity, or if the tests measures what its supposed to. Kring, Johnson, Davison, and Neale have stated that “The data from the various assessment techniques used complement each other and provide a more complete picture of the person” (Kring, Johnson, Davison, Neale,2010, 74). Even though they complement each other, there are differences amongst the assessment types. Two in particular are the Personality Tests and the Intelligence tests, which in a broader category are classified as psychological tests. Although these assessment types are having their differences and similarities, they are reliable, valid, and complement each other which help a psychologist/psychiatrist arrive at the best conclusion yet.

In personality assessment, the most common type is the self-report personality inventory. This test contains sentences which given to the examinee to assess how the examinee would respond to particular situations. A process called standardization compares the results to the norms which were created to score the test. (Neale, 2010, 79). If one scores well, then they stand as a well functioning human being psychologically. One of the well known examples of these tests was created in 1940 by two psychologists and which is known as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.
