Personality Assessment and its Role in Recruitment and Selection Personality is unique amongst every individual and it has become a largely researched area in psychology. During recruitment and selection, an organisation aims to find the most suitable candidate for the position. In order to do this, it is not sufficient to only analyse whether the candidate has the required competencies related to performance, but rather their personality must also be assessed to see whether they are a true fit. Therefore in this essay the role of personality assessment in the recruitment and selection process will be discussed. There will be a brief discussion of what personality is, particularly from the Trait approach. It will then be noted as to what tests are used to assess personality and whether they are valid and reliable. Special reference will also be paid to how personality is important in the workplace. The essay will end with a discussion involving the employers’ use of online social networking websites during the recruitment and selection process. The definition of personality in which this essay will refer to must first be established. According to Pastorino and Doyle-Portillo (2010), personality is a unique combination of feelings, attitudes, thoughts, impulses, behaviour and habits that characterize how the individual will typically react across a range of situations. Personality is currently widely believed to have some innate qualities and other qualities which are developed through the interaction which the environment (Pastorino, & Doyle-Portillo, 2010). An important area to note is that it is how one will typically react, thus personality will guide our behaviour but it is not fixed.
