As a registered nurse, I impact many lives. Therefore, my nursing philosophy is critical as I interact with my patients, their family members, and other medical professionals in providing quality healthcare at all times. My personal nursing philosophy has been greatly influenced by the environment in which I was raised. Excellent morals and beliefs were instilled in me at an early age by my grandparents and mother.
The respect for human dignity is something I must practice daily in my field. The Code of Ethics states, “The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person.” (Association, 2001) Meaning every patient is treated the same no matter their age, gender, ethnicity, or social status. Many infants brought to the NICU have various social status. Some infants are addicted to pain medication, others not having a home, and some babies’ parents are still technically a child themselves. Although, I may treat all these situations differently they all require compassion and respect.
My personal belief is that what you give to your patients will come back to you. It has guided me to do my best in my everyday job and duties as a nurse. As a nurse caring for, not only sick patients, but also fellow people, coworkers, new graduates, and agency nurses who have never worked in the units before. UNIT 4223-301 OUTCOME 1 UNDERSTAND WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR COMPETENCE IN OWN WORK ROLE. +DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. My duties are to provide clinical and non clinical support to a multi professional team which can range from the care of a new mother and baby to the day to day running of the ward. I am responsible in undertaking direct care for patients and implementing this as to prepare the patient for going home safely with the knowledge they receive. There are so many different ethics situations that could arise in nursing, for example, bringing hospice in for a patient who needs it, but doesn’t want to admit it or bringing social services into a situation where a patient might be being abused. The advice this RN gave was to stay open to the situation and diplomatic. Sandy also said don’t hesitate to use your authority if need be. It is our duty as a nurse to make sure the well being of your patient is being met. Completing this assignment gave some insight into the real world of nursing not just what you see on TV.
