The two themes I will explore in this essay are Personal Self Reinvention and Racism/White Supremacy/Racial Prejudice. Personal Self Reinvention, whether it be personal, in business, in a community, geographically, it’s been going on for thousands of years. Let’s examine the plights of the Native American. First they had to reinvent themselves when the Spanish arrived. They wanted to “convert” Natives into Christians; then, the Rancheros came along and made the Natives their servants. Twice in approximately 75 year’s time, the original inhabitants of California had to reinvent themselves. There is not a lot of evidence as to how the Native Americans felt about the mission or ranchero life, since many were not able to record their thoughts and experiences. Bartolomea, a Native American woman, recorded that mission life was a life of misery, humiliation and terror. Our biggest indicator of the Native American’s true testimony were the many forms of resistance. During the Gold Rush, California was flooded with a new population, the “49ers”. Men (mostly) came from all over the United States, the rest of the world soon followed. The 49ers came in search of gold, but since many of them didn’t find this fortune, what made them stay? It’s not like they could get on a jet and fly back to the east coast. Getting to California took months by almost any route that was taken, at best 6-8 weeks after routes were improved. Many came to California in search of gold, but many stayed and took up new professions. Some went into retail and opened stores to aid the miners, others wrote about new ways to obtain gold, The Digger’s Handbook and Truth about California by D. L. Sydney . The plight of the miners brought about new professions for many men and women and with their new lives, most did not return to the homes they left. • The first article I found,
