Personal Responsibility: What Does It Mean To You Debra Wilson GEN200 September 9, 2013 Prof. Wenzell Personal Responsibility: What Does It Mean To You The importance of personal responsibility is something that seems to be expressed by people more often in recent year. The way in which people define the idea of personal responsibility, however, is hardly consistent. For some, personal responsibility is about ethics, while others define personal responsibility based on religious teachings. The different viewpoints and ideas from which personal responsibility can be defined makes the concept something that is very personal. The purpose of this essay is to examine the concept of personal responsibility from a truly personal point of view. In this essay, my personal view of responsibility as it applies to my life is examined. The ideas expressed in this essay are reinforced with information obtained from academic sources. In my opinion, personal responsibility is knowing that the decisions I make will affect me and I am the only one responsible for the choices I make. The idea of personal responsibility is something that is important to me because I am not responsible for only myself; instead, I am responsible for caring for my children. While the concept of personal responsibility is something that is important for everybody, it is something that became much more important to met when I had children and became responsible for caring for others (Chavkin, 1999). In order to be an example of the positive effect of personal responsibility for my children, I need to know and understand the definition of personal responsibility, and what it means to me.
