The film, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief explores many ideas and tales which originate form Greek Mythology. The director, Chris Columbus has though, changed details of the original myths to express cinematographic effects to the intended audience (as the film is rated M). Very briefly, Zeus accuses the son of Poseidon of stealing his distinct thunder bolt and gives Poseidon 10 days to return the thunderbolt. Percy Jackson realizes that he is the son of Poseidon; a demi-god and peruses several adventures to find and return the thunderbolt to Zeus and save his mother from Hades. Percy’s adventures are influenced from several tales of Greek Mythology; Heracles, Percus, Dionysus and Odysseus, just to name a few. The sources I have predominantly used the Primary sources, Apollodorus; The Library of Greek Mythology (Translated by Robin Hard) and the Secondary sources: Classical Myth By Barry B. Powell and Greek Myths by Robert Graves. According to the Primary and Secondary sources, Percus is guided by Athena and Hermes to discover the whereabouts of the tools needed to kill Medusa. From The sisters of Oraeae, (also referred to as the ‘gorgon sisters) they are told to go see Nymphs. The Nymphs they obtained the winged sandals, Kibisis and the Cap of Hades, which would turn the wearable invisible. The director altered the details of whom Percus obtained these items in order to develop a protagonist in the plot of the film. Percy obtains a sword, shield and winged converse shoes from Luke, The son of Hermes. Luke had inherited these items from his father. Luke would then appear to bring a resolution to the problem of the lost thunderbolt, stolen form Zeus. Percy and Luke then commence in a physical altercation on the top of the rooftops in New York. An altercation between the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ consists in nearly all written examples of Greek Mythology.
