Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Out of billions of people living around the world, many are still suffering from poverty and 70 percent of them are women (CARE.org). They are poor not only on the aspect of insufficiency of basic need but also on the scarcity on their basic human rights. In Philippine legends, it was believed that the term “babae” came from the name of the first woman – “sibabay” which when interpreted becomes “silang mabababa” (Aleta, 1977). Even in the olden times, women were perceived as the “second sex” (de Beauvoir, 1949), inferior to the first sex which the race of men. They are treated as submissive and reliant to the male species. Even the media, more significantly – television, having a powerful influence on socialization, portrays women in stereotyped roles. Men are always depicted in chief roles while 22% of women’s roles are on the minor ones, having less effect on the conclusion of the story (Barcus, 1983). Empowerment is what most of today women desire to achieve as civilization is rapidly changing. Roles of women in every aspect of life have been always downplayed. Women are always portrayed as homemakers, sexual objects, gullible, domestic helpers, exploited, and much other negative representation. The fast paced and growing society and the emergence of new media and technology paved way to women’s realization on the power they acquire in themselves. Korean Dramas in the Philippine Context Korean dramas, locally coined as “Koreanovelas” have been here on the Philippines for almost eight years now . The fascination of Filipinos to Korean dramas started when a considerable number of Korean students came to the Philippines to learn the English language for a very cheap price (Flores, 2006).
