People who suffer from Mental Conditions Tonya Clemons HCA 430 Catherine Amitrano October 29, 2013 Individuals who suffer from a mental condition face discrimination and they have a higher stigma due to having misconceptions of their mental state. People treat individuals with mental conditions as if they are dumb or retarded who cannot perform their own responsibilities for their lives. So there needs to be a place where these individuals can have a piece of mind along with the health care that is needed. Although, most individuals who have a mental condition will die prematurely, because they do not receive proper treatment or even have the adequate care that is needed for their mental state. “Mental illness has the same effect on life-expectancy as smoking, and more than obesity and mental illness accounts for nearly a quarter of the total burden of disease.” (CEP, 2012). This paper will discuss in more detail what program is needed to help improve individuals with mental conditions in the community of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. 1. A description of why this population group is vulnerable and in desperate need for help within your community. People who have a mental condition are in desperate need of help, because most of these people live in low-income families where they have a lot of stress and abuse. They have no health insurance and some are even homeless. Some of these individuals come from a long line of physical abuse or sexual abuse which can cause a mental condition. This is one reason why they are a vulnerable group and most of these people who deal with any kind of mental problem are in need of help from the community. 2. Identification of the health service needs for this special population.
