People Are Too Dependent on Technology

You hear it all the time, especially among “older” folks. “Our society is too dependent on technology.” Everything runs by computer, smart phone and all sorts of things that used to be alien to me. I don’t profess to know how they work, but I usually know which buttons to push to get what I want. Things had been running rather smoothly, until last week. I had just fallen asleep when I was rudely awakened by a thunder clap about one a.m. I thought to myself, “It’s just thunder. Go back to sleep.” I have lived most of my life in or near the mid-Atlantic coast and have been through many hurricanes and ferocious storms. No big deal. I drifted back to sleep only to be awakened by a very loud crack about 10 minutes later. And then it hit like Thor’s hammer. The winds came up, whipping and wailing. Thunder clap after thunder clap hit with a ferocity seldom heard. Lightning lit up the sky. The infamous storm of ’62 flashed into my brain. I was a scared kid then. This was worse. . . much worse. Now I was a scared old lady. Literally petrified, I seriously considered crawling under the bed. There were loud cracks in the thunder that didn’t seem quite right. It sounded like a loud horror movie, but it was very, very real. And then, about 40 minutes or so later, it stopped as quickly as it came on. I drifted back to sleep, confident in the fact that they would have the power back on by the time I woke up. Popped awake about 7 a.m. or so. Still no power. So my husband got up and attempted to perform our usual no-power-after-the-storm routine, going to Wawa for hot coffee. I didn’t hear the car start. A minute later, he was back inside telling me he wasn’t going anywhere and pointing to the window. What I saw will stay with me until I draw my last breath. There was a network of huge trees laying down across our 125-foot driveway. Some were on their own and others were stacked
