Pediatric Nursing as a Career At some point or another you’ve all come into contact with a child. By a show of hands, how many of you know a child under the age of 16? Perhaps you live with one, or have one of your own. The question is, who is it that gives them their medical care? The answer is a pediatric nurse. Tonight, I’m going to talk about pediatric nurses and what they do, educational requirements, and benefits. Pediatric nurses are nurses who specialize and work closely with infants, children, and adolescents. I became personally became interested in pediatric nursing because of my brothers. I have 5 of them at home, and helped raise them, which is how I came to realize that I love to work with children. Pediatric nursing can be a challenging, yet rewarding career.

I. According to the Occupational Outlook handbook, 2011 Edition, Pediatric nurses are typically registered nurses who provide health care to children and adolescents, so they basically do everything a registered nurse does.
a. treat and care for patients which include
i. starting, maintaining, and discontinuing iv lines ii. administering therapies and treatments iii. recording patient observations, and reporting to the doctors
b. educate patients and public of various medical conditions
c. provide advice and emotional support the patient’s family members

II. Becoming an pediatric nurse can take a long time and a lot of work
a. take appropriate classes and acquire a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) from an accredited institution, 4 years
i. classroom education = nursing ethics and patient management ii. clinical education = working in the hospitals or clinics
b. obtain the title of registered nurse by taking the National Council Licensing
