Role Models in Sport Australians have an obsession with sport. We watch it, see it, play it and dream it. We follow the lives of athletes and look up to them. The profile of athletes in the AFL (Australian Football League) is considered to be high and our expectations of them and their behaviour may be considered to be too unrealistic. These athletes play an important role in every Australian’s lives and we are relying on athletes to perform both on and off the field. For this reason, the AFL and other sporting codes are logical topics for the attention of sociologists and other media groups. The media are becoming so involved with the AFL code these days, contributing to the succession of the sport and in many parts of Figueroa’s framework. As this relationship between both the AFL and the media grow, it’s becoming much easier for these athletes to develop into role models for the younger kids. In saying this, these players are under so much pressure and judgement more than it has ever been before which has contributed to the increase in sociological issues in the AFL. Figueroa’s framework looks at the forces that influence people to play sport and support the code of sport. Cultural factors on five different levels conclude access and equity of sport.
