Characterization of Parvez Parvez grew up in Lahore, where he was taught the Koran. Although Parvez was taught to be a Muslim, his relationship to the Koran is very bad, which becomes clear in many parts of the text. The reason why his relationship to the Koran is really bad is because he had had some bad experience with the religion:” The Maulvi had attached a string to the ceiling and tied it to Parvez’ hair to stop him from falling asleep, while he was studying the Koran.” Parvez has immigrated to England, and he lives there with his wife and son, Ali. Even though he is not originally from the country, he loves England and is adapted to the Western culture. He tries hard to fit in, and to create a healthy environment for his son It is clear that Parvez loves his son, and he is really worried about him, when he throws his stuff out, and become more secretive. He wants to find out and help his son, with that Parvez thinks is a problem. When he finds out that, Ali has become very religious; he tries to be understanding about his son’s choice of living. He even wants to be more religious, if that would make their relationship better. Parvez has saved a lot of money to give Ali a proper education, therefore it strikes him very hard when Ali rejects him, drops out of school and becomes an orthodox Muslim. He wants Ali to have a good education, and marry a sweet girl. “Was it asking too much for Ali to get a good job now, marry the right girl and start a family? Once this happened, Parvez would be happy. His dreams of doing well in England would come true.” This also indicates that Parvez has a lot of dreams and hopes for his son, which his son doesn’t share. He is very determined about, how Ali should live. He has a drinking problem, an example for this is:” he went more to the whiskey bottle, even when he was at work.” And even though he knows he
