Sport in Australia has come to be known as one of the defining characteristics of the nation. Just like other Australian icons such as the Kanagroo, Sydney Harbour Bridge, etc; Australian citizens have a strong passion for all types of sports. Australians are encouraged to engage in any sport of their choice in a quest to inspire a healthy lifestyle.   While sport is said to play a significant role in the binding of our nation, only recent have studies begun to address the impact that sport has on social capital. There has been said to be many positives adding to the development and social capital of Australia through sporting engagement; especially in those rural communities that are still developing. However, just as economic capital can have positive and negative implications, so too can social capital (Black and Hughes, 2001). Debate still continues as to whether or not sporting engagement is a benefit; and is yet to be tested in Australia. Social capital is the way a community cooperates together through engagement in many forms in order to improve their standard of life and everything in between. It helps to bind together citizens in order to create a strong nation.
In this essay, the correlation between sporting engagement and social capital will be examined to see if there is evidence to support sport’s contribution on social capital; in a nation argued as “sports mad”. To examine this thought, 6 journals will be examined that are all related to sport and social capital in Australia.
