Introduction This project will focus on the communication environment of the New Gulf Coast Surgery Center in Ocean Springs, MS. The New Gulf Coast Surgery Center is an ambulatory surgery center. The center handles over thirty outpatient surgeries per day for six days a week. There are many procedures performed at the facility, but the main focus is on Gastroenterology. The facility has four Gastroenterologists who perform the procedures at the facility.
The Emergency Department consists of a 14+ pediatric department, a 29+ bed adult pod, four trauma bays and a locked emergency mental health department. There are right around 130 nurses in this department working a variety of shifts. The emergency department is approximately the size of 2 football fields. The facility is a designated cardiac catheter center, stroke center, and trauma center. The staff care for patients of every age with complaints ranging from a laceration to an amputation and everything in between.
A clinical placement experienced by the author was on a urology ward within a large teaching hospital where many patients attended for various investigations, elective surgery and emergency surgery into urological related disorders. Accordingly due to the nature of the work area a majority of the patients on the ward had to be catheterised and patients were often discharged home with long-term urethral catheters in situ. As part of the authors experience in developing knowledge and skills observations were under taken into urethral catheter care assessment. The theoretical framework used to guild the nurses in their assessment was that of Roper, Logan and Tierney’s 12 activities of daily living with one of these being that of sexuality. Sadler (1991) suggests that catheter care should be carefully planned and monitored and crisis management avoided.

Medicare Part A Mrs. Zwick has all three parts of Medicare. With part A Medicare will pay for the days she was in the hospital. She was admitted into the hospital and was there for five days. According to the official U.S. Government site for Medicare, “Medicare part A (Hospital Insurance) covers a semi private room, meals, general nursing and other services and supplies. This includes the care you get in an acute care hospital, a critical access hospital, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, long term care hospitals, inpatient care as part of a qualifying clinical research study and inpatient mental health care.” (2012) With Medicare A you can stay in the hospital up to 90 days for each benefit period.
The study was planned and carried out as a descriptive and cross-sectional study. There 600 experienced and 87 newly graduated nurses in a military hospital. The researchers used a data collection form to report characteristics and their views on the causes and reporting of medication errors. They applied this existing theory to this new situation in order to determine generalizability to different subjects, age groups, races, locations, cultures or any such variables. The researchers obtained a written approval from the ethical committee of the military education and research hospital and got approval from the nursing department as well.
