In addition of going to school, working class students also have to get a job to be able to help out their families. Working class students have always struggled to get by during their years in college but most of these students have families who support their dreams of coming out of poverty and become somebody with no pressures. However there are also students who lack family support and deal with these issues alone throughout college. According to the New York Times article For Poor, Leap to College Often Ends in a Hard Fall, “Likely reasons [that low income students drop out of college]
This attitude undermines our best interests.” After we graduate from university, a lot of people want to find a stable job and then fight for it. Year by year, they lost their passion to play football or join some clubs instead they have to earn money for their family and children. The “A”students put their all time to study, then get a great certificate from top university. But they don't know how to choose a suitable work and what kind of life they want. They didn't spend time to socialize to make friends nor extended interest, this is a big problem to their future life.
Twenge says, “There’s this idea that, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to work, but I’m still going to get all the stuff I want” (Peck 303). Some young adults have not even left their home before. They enjoy staying at home and not realizing that they should go out to find jobs. The main reason why young adults do not want to work is that their parents still guide them like children. Today, millions young adults are facing real problems: lack of job opportunities, housing, and trying to survive in a fast, globalized world.
In “Grades and Money” by Steve Vogel, the author mentions, “… they talk about their grades all the time”(Page 389). Students rarely speak about what they are learning from the course, which is what education is all about. They don’t understand that grades just show if you passed or failed the course. Instead of taking a course that they are interested in, students take courses that they will be able to earn a high grade. “By tying grades to money, we give students incentives not to take risks” (Vogel, 392) that stop them from choosing challenging courses in college.
Say Hello to my Little Study Buddy Most adults will arguably tell someone college is ‘the time of your life’ but what they forget to mention is the hardships and stresses it actually brings. There is a whole new curriculum, much harder than a high school one, and for most people their first time living on their own. One must learn more material in a shorter length of time from difficult assignments that will require a majority of one’s leisure time. The harsh reality is that students without parental supervision will unfortunately want to waste their free time doing more entertaining things than cramming their brains with gratuitous amount of new statistics, formulas and information. Students will usually opt out of performing homework
In the past, one could support their family without a college education and still have the means to live comfortably. However that is not the case anymore. In today’s society all of the high paying jobs require and demand college experience. These jobs that are at the high paying end of the spectrum have changed their basic requirements because of technology rapidly increasing day by day, getting more complicated and difficult-which makes them want to make sure that their employees are properly trained. This however, does not sit well with people who are becoming unemployed or who have seniority at their current jobs.
Welfare Reforms The dream of most women is to have the traditional family, which includes a husband and their children. There are more single mothers in this day and age that face more challenges on the way to achieving the American Dream. They find it hard to provide financially even working a full-time job because the pay is normally minimum wage and most still rely on public assistance to make ends meet. Some single mothers lack education and work experience, which prevents them from obtaining a decent paying job. Budget cuts to welfare programs are making it that much harder for the single mother to provide the necessities for their children because these supplemental programs are necessary to the day to day workings of a family.
In addition, individuals who drop out of high school end up with minimum wage jobs. Countless high school drop outs don’t meet qualifications when they apply for various positions. Almost everywhere, a person goes to fill out a job application a high school diploma is part of the qualifications. In other cases, the applicant needs more training to apply for the positions that he or she desires. Therefore, more education is required in this present day of time.
Katherine Arnoldi talks about how she has a job that can provide her with the basic needs in life, but the job that she is working in isn’t something that she wants for the rest of her life. “As soon as I was meeting those basic needs, I thought about the future: about freedom from fear of factory layoffs, freedom from the monotony and misery of the job.” (Arnoldi: 258) In the essay “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Education” She struggles to find that answers to how she can work in the factory and still find answers to how she can improve her life by pursuing an education. All she wants, like many others, is an opportunity to feel like she can have a prospect of raising her family in an area that offers more than what she has to settle
There are so many answers to this question (i.e. take on another job, Go to or go back to college, or seek public assistances etc.) all that is an excellent answer, but it is hard to do, especially if a single parent cannot be there for their kid(s) if they take on another job(s) they will spend all their time at work to support their kid(s); or some people cannot go to or back to college because their multiple job requires them to work long hours and if they seek help from the government it is so much they can do considering the economy crisis. That is why it is important to increase the minimum wages so they won’t sacrifice their time with time away from their family and could enroll in or go back to school/college to earn their GED or degree so they could have better paying job. With the increased of pay, low and middle classes don’t have to worry to make any sacrificing the essentials that they or their family need; According to Time for a Raise, “If the minimum wage was increased to a level at which families could sustain themselves, fewer people may end up needing government assistance for housing, food, or health care.
