The foster parents are the unsung heroes they are the main care provider for the children placed in care. The foster parents are required to put in many hours of classes in support for the children that are coming in their home well before they get their first placement. The foster parent virtually gives up their own freedoms to become foster parents they have to grant permission for DHS to dig in their own private lives they are finger printed and placed in the FBI data base foster parents must submit to monthly investigation to their home which could even include the social worker checking their refrigerator and cupboards for food. The foster parent is granted a monthly stipend for taking care of these children. The foster parent must have a criminal background check and are required to do a two and a half hour interview before their approved to be foster parents.
I could not have asked for a better upbringing. I was born in Canton, Ohio where my mom’s grandmother, parents, and sister and her family all lived within the block of us. My dad’s side was just a state away. My whole family comes from a Christian background and they are all involved in church in someway. My granddaddy and grandmommy each teach Sunday school classes to college students and my granddaddy often gives testimonies about his battles with numerous cancers while still being a strong Christian.

Through chronological order, by years, we see the painful yet remarkable scars left upon David Henry along with his entire family, due to one stupid decision, that in actuality was meant for a better cause. David must deal with these consequences for a long twenty-five years, which are slowly portrayed through this book. The story begins its chronological sequence during the March of 1964. Doctor David Henry’s wife Norah suddenly goes into labor on a treacherous stormy night, forcing him to deliver their child at a clinic rather than a hospital.

In this book, Carlson tells of her trials and tribulations raising her bipolar son Ben, and there are many incredible challenges. At age 14, just when Ben is perceived as “stable” on his lithium, and his Prozac, he kills himself. Carlson details her viewpoint on suicide prevention; and it is insightful. She proposes age-appropriate self-tests and workbooks that allow a child to answer questions regarding his/her state of mind.
