Parenting styles effect on raising children Liberty University Human Growth and development COUN502 Katherine Niebuhr Abstract Parenting styles have been under the microscope for years. The author places the four major parenting styles, Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive and Uninvolved under this microscope to determine if parenting styles have a significant influence on juvenile delinquency. The major parenting styles are also contrasted with the biblical standards for parenting and how biblical foundations influence parenting styles. Parenting styles and their effect on raising children The first time that Randall was arrested, his parents cried all night long as they wondered what they did wrong. Randall was raised in a good home, his parents had a great marriage, both of whom worked and provided for the family. He was raised in the church and had a biblical foundation for life from an early age. So why then two weeks after his eighteenth birthday was he sitting in a jail cell with drug charges looming? Did Randall’s parents style of parenting influence his future behavior, or were there external influences involved? Parenting styles has been the center of the discussion concerning the outcome of a child’s life since Adam and Eve had their first two children Cain and Able. In this paper, biblical parenting styles will be examined as well as modern concepts of parenting. We will also discuss the four major modern parenting styles and how their authors established their criteria. The four modern parenting styles, authoritarian, permissive, authoritative and uninvolved will be compared and contrasted and we will see what parenting style has the greater positive and negative effect on children. Is it set in stone that a certain parenting style is the best or do external influences such as peer pressure, media and societal pressures
