Parenthood Analysis
Parenthood is a comedy about parents trying their best to raise normal and well adjusted kids; what they learn is to loosen up and accept their children’s imperfections.   Just about every family with children can relate to this movie, because no matter how perfect some of the families look on the outside, they all have some sort of imperfections or problems.   Steve Martin gives a wonderful performance in the movie.   He plays a 35 year old neurotic attorney named Gil Buckman.   He tries to balance the pressures of raising a family in the suburbs of St. Louis.   Almost all lawyer fathers go through the same thing because; it is such a demanding job with extremely long hours.   Gil raises the question to himself of how easy is it to raise a family when you are trying to have your own life.   Gil never over works himself because he wants to be active in his 3 kids’ lives.   That is a very dedicated father because my husband works two jobs and about 18 hours a day.   My husband barely ever spends time with his children.   It is not his fault though because he needs to work two jobs for awhile.   Gil’s father was not in his life much when he was a kid, and he does not want to be like his father.   My father left my mother when I was five so unfortunately I did not see my father much while I was growing up.   Gil gets passed over for a promotion at work because another associate got the job.   The reason that his associate got the job was because he was a work-a-holic, with no family, and he can put in the long hours and take clients to fancy dinners.   It doesn’t sound fair, but when you think about it, the associate does deserve the job.   It would not be fair to pass up the associate that works harder.   He chose career over family, and he deserves the promotion without a doubt.   Gil’s oldest son Kevin has some emotional problems, and his school wants him to take special classes for special needs children.   The psychologist says that Kevin is disruptive,...
