Summary Panasonic and Japan’s Changing Culture is about how japan is moving from a traditional way of living to a more modern way of life. Panasonic and many other Japanese companies have always looked after their employees and in return have had the loyalty of its employees. Panasonic offered its employees a guarantee job for life, however, the company would be ran by seniority and that was great for the generation who lived during the depression and war years. Now, however, things are beginning to change. Japan is westernizing and its residents want to be more to be more than just a “salaryman”. Both the companies and its employees want opportunities for growth at a faster rate. Japans worker and company traditions are fading. During this recession many Japanese companies including Panasonic have had to lay off many employees thus ending its lifetime job guarantee. How did traditional Japanese culture benefit Panasonic during 1950s-1980s? Did traditional values become more of a liability during the 1990s and early 2000s? How so? It gave them loyal and hardworking employees. These people would bend over backwards for Panasonic and other companies like it. The traditional values became a liability when the economy fell. The company was making less and it was probably getting expensive taking care of so many individuals; adding the poor performance as the straw that broke the camel’s back. What were the triggers of cultural change in Japan during the 1990s? How is cultural change starting to affect traditional values in Japan? The economy was what triggered the cultural change during the 1990s. Panasonic and many other companies had to go back and take a look at what was need and what was not.
