Package Analysis of Sierra Mist Natural The purpose of a package is to protect, preserve, and measure what’s inside. The package also serves as a vessel upon which information about the product and images used to catch the consumer’s eye are attached. In a competitive marketplace, companies make use of colorful and attention grabbing art to sell their products. Before a consumer can purchase a product, they must first know of the product's existence. The art on the packaging serves to draw in a potential customer so that they will then read the text that touts the supposed advantages of this product over other similar brands. A prime example of this is the soft drink Sierra Mist Natural. PepsiCo, the manufacturer of Sierra Mist Natural, distributes the drink in many different containers such as two-liter and twenty fluid ounce plastic bottles as well as twelve fluid ounce cans. All of the containers, including the cardboard box used to keep a case of the soda together, display the same art. The image depicted on the drink is lemons and limes splashing into a clear liquid which is assumed to be the beverage in question. Beyond this, the color scheme is white and various shades of green. With just a glimpse of a can of this drink, and without yet reading any of the text displayed on the container, a consumer will know that the product is a soda of the lemon-lime variety. Once the container art has grabbed a consumer’s attention, they will likely read the text on the package in order to see what promises are made about the product. In this case, the first promise made is that the drink is “natural” as stated in the product name. Below this, the package states that the drink contains no artificial ingredients.
