P3 – Explain patterns and trends in the health and illness among different social groupings. M2 – Use different sociological perspectives to discuss patterns and trends of health and illness in two different social groups. In this report I will discuss the different patterns and trends among different social groupings. Measuring health There are three main sources that we get health and illness statistics from, the government, charitable organizations and pressure groups, and academic researchers and other authors. There are many different statistics that the government collects and produces. They look at everything from social trends like the smoking and drinking rates to population trends like the birth rates, death rates, and infant mortality rates. The government also produce something called the Health Statistical Quarterly which is a chart that comes out every quarter of the year with birth rates, death rates, and suicide rates that get analysed and grouped by the age, gender, location, and social class of each person. There are also different charitable organisations and pressure groups that are around like the charity Mind (The National Association for Mental Health in the United Kingdom), which is a mental health charity. Charities like these provide up to date statistics about the sorts of information that relate to them. On the Mind website, they give you lots of information about different mental health problems and advise you on ways to get help. Mind Says that; “When you’re living with a mental health problem, or supporting someone who is, having access to the right information - about a condition, treatment options, or practical issues - is vital.” On the mind website, they have a list of news articles and pieces of writing that talk about the recent news about mental health and subjects that are related to that.
