Owl Creek Bridge

The story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce, takes place during the Civil War in the southern United States. In the opening paragraph, the main character, Peyton Farquhar, a young slave owner and rebel sympathizer, is standing on Owl Creek Bridge, about to be hanged. The story then goes into a brief flashback to enlighten the reader on how the man go in this predicament. Farquhar, having been visited by a Union soldier in disguise, was lured into trying to sabotage the bridge in which they were planning to cross. After the flashback, the hanging commences and as Farquhar begins to fall, the grave sensation of his death is described. But suddenly the rope breaks and Farquhar is freed dropping twenty feet down into a fast flowing river. He manages to free his hands, remove the noose from his swollen neck, and swim for freedom. The Union soldiers on the bridge fire at him, but miraculously he escapes. He then wanders through the forest back towards his home, eventually walking on a known road to his door step. But just as he is about to embrace his wife who has come out to joyfully greet him, Farquhar is snapped back to reality. He dangles from the bridge, dead. Throughout the story, Bierce uses the human element of emotion to create a sympathetic relationship between the reader and Farquhar. Bierce captures the readers attention by making Farquhar human and sympathetic to the reader. He situation is not described in any terms that would make his death seem justified or fair. Peyton's humanity and almost childish mischief is in direct contrast to the lack of humanity of those about to hang him. All the Union soldiers around the bridge not described to have any character or personality. They effortlessly play the role of shadowy executioners, wearily lacking conscience or compassion for the act the are participating in. They do their duty
