Big Two-Hearted River: Part I and II (Analysis) This story is about a soldier's return to nature. The soldiers name is Nick, he has returned to his hometown as a means of recovering from trauma of a war. It appears nature has a healing effect for Nick, whose experiences while camping and fishing serve as a means for his healing. The effect of the war is reflected in his indifferent, detached, catatonic state. When he finds that his hometown has been completely destroyed by fire, he takes a walk through the woods, takes on meticulous fishing rituals, and has a fascination with the fish.

Continuing down the river after he finds Jim they come across what they think is the King and the Duke. Huck and Jim find themselves in a bit of a twist of trouble with the King and Duke. The King and Duke were pretending to be Peter Wilks’ brother from England so he can try to steal all of his money that was in his will. The boys get caught by the village and are caused to flee for their safety. Huck finally gets away from the King and Duke but has seemed to lost Jim on the way.
As Peyton prepares to die he seems to succumb to the enormous weight on his mind and starts to ‘black out.’ As the plank he is perched on is removed he plunges to what will surely be his certain death. But then something unexpected happens. The rope is he to be hanged from breaks and Peyton falls into the rushing waters below. Amazed, Peyton swims with the current as he dodges artillery fire from the soldiers on the bridge above. Through sheer luck alone he reaches land and begins the journey to his home.

In the beginning of the story, Raskolnikov formulates and executes a plan to kill an mean pawnbroker, who just sits on all this wealth while there are so many needy around her. He performs the perfect crime with no witnesses and any evidences.

Ignorance is something that is oblivious to humans and are not aware of their lack of knowledge about other people. This is a perfect example of how the Oxford police were indifferent to the crime and had no interest in pursuing justice. It is one thing to realize that so many townspeople would care so little, but it is the police’s job to care and effectively ‘protect and serve’. It is hard to believe that even in the 1970’s so many people in my own town could so readily display such a disgusting side of human nature.
