Overcoming Barriers to Communication (Task C) Methods of communication can vary depending on the background of the individual. There are several factors which can influence the ways in which we communicate, these can include; upbringing and culture, understanding of language, physical or mental abilities and our overall confidence. Communication can be delivered in both verbal and non verbal forms. Effective communication will include consideration to the following factors, * Tone and pace of voice * Body language (Posture, eye contact etc) * Facial expression * Use of touch * Physical proximity * Clarification (repeating if necessary) * Questioning An individual may have personal barriers to being able to employ or understand all of the above factors so it is important to be aware of the limitations of those we are communicating with and to adapt our communication methods accordingly. Examples of this would be to use a more understandable (less technical) vocabulary when communicating with service users than perhaps we would use with colleagues or employers or by employing a non verbal method of communication to someone who was hard of hearing. Barriers to Effective Communication Potential barriers to effective communication can include; disability (sensory, physical or mental), Language barriers (those of different nationalities), Poor environment (noisy rooms etc) and Inappropriate levels of verbal technicality (using ‘jargon’ etc). There are numerous ways in which we can seek to remove potential barriers in communication and adapt the way in which we communicate to be more person centered and effective, these include; Understanding language needs.
