Cher and her friends spent all their time shopping, doing makeovers and chasing after guys. One scene of the movie showed Cher sending flowers to herself and dressing "in her cutest outfits" in an attempt to impress a crush. Cher was ditzy, superficial, and, to make things worse, she was a lousy driver. This was a very popular movie, and a television series was later based on it. Many girls watched this movie and emulated Cher, not realizing that they were buying in to this
When she became an adolescent, she began to experiment with the power she, as a young woman, has over men. Marin taught Esperanza fundamental facts about boys, but the first major step in Esperanza’s awareness of her sexuality was when she and her friends explored Mango Street in high-heeled shoes. She then realized the power of the shoes gave her, the idea that physical beauty helped her escape the squalor of her surroundings. Esperanza quickly learned, that the patriarchal society which she lives denies the power of female sexuality. The bum who attempted to kiss Rachel was one of the first in a series of men who used force to take what girls don’t want to give freely.
She soon met two boys named Chase and Brendon. She soon fell into an abuse relationship with Brendon but wouldn’t leave because of her passionate love for Crank. After this Kristina becomes more involved with Chase and they fell head over heals for each other. Her addiction to crank lead her to become friends with a girl named Robyn. She was a big connection to
Another major theme in the vignette is one of sexuality because as Esperanza is in a transition state and first experiences her emerging sexuality as a desire to be desired by the boy at the dance. Esperanza is ashamed of her feet and during the baptism she says “My feet growing bigger and bigger” (Cisneros 47). This symbolizes her insecurities growing. The theme of insecurity is common throughout the book. In the previous vignette Esperanza was scolded by a nun who said Esperanza lives in an ugly house across the school and even though she didn’t live there she was too embarrassed to tell the nun that she didn’t live there(Cisneros 45).
Three examples of his theories include, Oedipal Complex, the Trio (Id, ego, superego) and his theories on dreams that were discussed in his book, “The Interpretation of Dreams.” The Oedipal Complex is a child’s sexual interest in his or her opposite sex parent, typically resolved through identification with the same-sex parent. This theory goes on to claim that sons gain emotional and sexual attraction to their mother while also feeling anger towards their father (Feldman, 2011, G-6). When Freud published his theories, he “shocked the world by claiming that even infants had a sex drive and that, as in the Oedipus Complex, little boys became sexually fixated on their own mother, while viewing their fathers as hated sexual rivals to be defeated or killed off” (Sigmund Freud). Under Freud’s interpretation, dependency and rivalry became sex and violence (Kramer, 2006, p. 86). He concludes that it is the fate of all of us, perhaps to direct our first sexual impulse towards our mother, and our first hated and our first murderous wish against our father.
As a teenager there will be a time where breaking the bonds of childhood, entering a world of rebellion, and being obsessed with popularity will be normal. For teenage girls, in order to acquire this popularity they need to be thin, busty, and wear revealing clothing while gossiping about peers and spending time worrying about boys and parties rather than their academics. But, where did this image of how to be a popular teenage girl come from? For decades, teen films have portrayed popular teenage girls this way and the film Mean Girls is no exception. This film not only displays how the world expects teenage girls to act, but also how difficult it is for teenage girls to resist acting this way.
Bender carries the reader through the life and mind of these teenage girls. The language in this story presents a sequence of emotions and issues that range from body image, insecurity, betrayal, and jealousy. Bender brings to life the heart wrenching issue of body image that most teenage girls face. The story starts by describing the new butts that each girl received as, “a gift from the god of time.” (178). Therefore the girls have just hit puberty and are discovering themselves in a whole new way.

I remember she always appealed to me, not in a girlfriend way but more like she’s different kind of way. I remember walking up to her and saying Hi and then after our introduction the conversation completely shifted and we talked about our body parts and she said something like “I look at the parts on my body” and with those few words she had made me laugh more than I ever had. We didn’t become friends until the middle of the year because my best friend at the time made me and our other two friends bully her. Eventually we didn’t feel conferrable with what she told us to do and we became friends. Now it’s the beginning of 8th grade and we’re as close as any two people can
