Running head: The Orion Shield Project The Orion Shield Project Executive Summary Henry Larsen and Scientific Engineering Corporation (SEC) recommended Gary Allison with 14-years of project engineering experience and a PH.D in mechanical engineering for Project Manager of the Orion Shield Project. Gary accepted the Project Manager position and within ten months of acceptance Gary was reprimanded and demoted from his position. Mr. Larsen challenged Gary with unethical decision, which undermined Gary’s integrity and his ability to become an effective project manager. Leadership is defined as the ability to influence others to accomplish a mission, project, or task. Although, Gary is an accomplished project engineer, the transition from employee to manager is not as easy as he thought. Supervising a team, understanding the working dynamic of your team, and knowing how communicate with your team is a project managers skill. Throughout the scenario below Gary failed to make the right decision, lead his team, and communicate with is customer, superiors, and team. We discuss the Gary’s Situation, the project, the project issues, what Gary did right and what he did wrong and finally, what I do differently. The Situation On 2 December, Project Manager Gary Allison indentified a technical specification error on the Orion Project. During testing SEC designed component failed to operate above 130 degrees, normal operating temperature for this component range from -65 to 145 degrees. Henry Larsen, the director of engineering met wet with Gary one week before the final proposal to discuss SEC’s position and concerns with the operating component failure to work above 130 degrees.
