Jarrius Williams English Comp I 11/25/06 1:00-1:50 Pizza, Chicago Style The city of Chicago is known for its many sites such as, the Sears Tower, Water Tower, and Navy Pier just to name a few. However, most people outside of Chicago do not know that it is also known for its legendary deep dish pizza. In order for one to have a better understanding of Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, one must have knowledge about the origin of pizza in the United States of America (USA) and its various styles. Pizza was introduced to the USA by “Italian immigrants in the late 19th century.” Major cities like San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago are a few places where pizza was sold. Italian men would walk up and down the streets and sell pizza because that was the way it was sold in Italy. In 1905 the first pizzeria was established by Gennaro Lombardi in Little Italy, Manhattan, New York. Business was very successful for Lombardi’s and it encouraged many Italians to open their own restaurants. There are various styles of pizza in the USA. Some of these Pizza styles are; the California Style, Chicago Style, Detroit Style, New Haven, Neapolitan, New York Style, Sicilian, and St Louis Style, just to name a few. The author of this paper will provide the reader with some information on several of these pizza styles. The California Style Pizza was created by the Chef Wolfgang Puck. “In his hands, crisp, thin-crusted pizza became a vehicle for unusual and delicious toppings like duck sausage and goat cheese and sun-dried tomato.” The New Haven pizza features the clam pizza pie. This pizza is made with the following ingredients “whole clams with garlic, olive oil and oregano, on a thin, brittle crust.” “Many New Haven pizzerias call their pies apizza, pronounced a-BEETS.” The Neapolitan Pizza is made in accordance with the rules that govern the Naples Pizza
