English 1005 5 March 2012 Organic food or regular food? Which is better? Organic food or regular food? Which of these two options would you choose for yourself? Which one is a better choice in terms of health? Organic food or regular food is often an issue that most people talk about these days. In my general opinion, organic foods have a lot more to offer for your health than non-organic foods. Over the years the consumption of organic food, alongside its price, too has increased. More people have switched from a normal lifestyle to a much healthier lifestyle, where they take exercise and food very seriously. What is organic food? What makes it so different than regular food? According to the Helpguide.org website, organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations ( “Understanding Organic Food Labels” 1). In simple words, organic food can be defined as agricultural produce or other ingredients that is grown without the use of pesticides such as synthetic fertilizer, genetically modified organisms, sewage sludge and ionizing radiation. As for the poultry, meat, eggs and dairy products, animals that are producing them are not biologically altered or fed antibiotics or growth hormones. The animals are also made to eat organically grown food so that they do not contain any hormones or chemicals in them. There are animals being injected with hormonal enzymes to ensure faster growth and to increase production. These animals are known as GMO or Genetically Modified Organisms (W.Paul, Kemp and Segal 1). The organic produces has to undergo an inspection from the USDA to ensure they meet the regulations and specifics of organic food, before they packed and shipped to the market.
