"Optimism About The Future" “optimism about the future” it’s discussed what constitutes happiness about the future, and explains techniques for improving happiness in that domain. This chapter also explained that importance of the types of explanatory style: permanence and pensiveness, and the importance of learning to argue with oneself. There are two crucial dimensions of explanatory style, permanence and pensiveness. Permanence can either be pessimistic or optimistic. Permanence pessimistic refers to people who think that bad events in their lives are permanent and think about bad things in terms of “always” or “never,” for example “exams are always hard” or “diets never work.” In the other hand permanence optimistic refers to people who believe good events have permanent causes. Optimistic people explain good events to themselves in terms of permanent causes such as traits and abilities. The second explanatory style is pervasiveness, this is about space and how we let one problem affect the rest of our lives. Some people can put their troubles into a box and go on with their lives and other people let one problem affect every area of their lives. This chapter also talks about how a person can increase hope and optimism in his or her life; this consists of recognizing and then disputing pessimistic thoughts. Once we target the pessimistic thought we argue against it with the ABCDE model. Adversity, Belief, Consequences, Disputation, and Energization, this model helps you to learn to argue with yourself. You analyze the problem or situation, then you think what is it that you believe is making it a bad experience, and the consequences that it will bring, then you take the facts and dispute the bad situation, finally you think about what you can do to make it better and turn it into a good situation.
