An example of this would be during group therapy while they were discussing the baseball game. McMurphy wanted to change the channels in the ward so that they could all watch the game instead. Nurse Ratched did not like this idea so she tries to fight it. Instead of McMurphy giving up he insists to “take a vote” of “all those in favor” to watch the baseball game instead to “raise your hands” in the air. This shows that McMurphy just wants to change things around the mental ward.
Sykes argues that institutional aggression is a result of the environment, and that it is occurs within prison institutions because they experience deprivation on a daily basis. These include deprivation of liberty, where the prisoners are deprived of their freedom, deprivation of autonomy, where the prisoners are deprived of their independence by constantly being controlled by officers and loss of security, where many of the prisoners feel insecure of themselves. This is then supported by Sykes who found that the potential threat to personal security increased the anxiety levels in inmates, even if the majority of prisoners were not a threat to them. However, inmates may cope with these struggles in a number of ways, including some prisoners isolating themselves in their cells, whereas others choose to rebel by being violent towards staff. A study supporting the deprivation model was carried out by McCorkle et al who found that overcrowding, lack of privacy and lack of meaningful activities leads to peer violence which shows that the environment and place, could be a significant factor influencing aggression within prisoners.
We can come across with these people in our lives or we can see them in movies. The movie called “Falling Down” deals with this problem as a subject, and there is a man -D-fens- who experiences mental breakdown in the film. In my opinion, there are many reasons why the man -D-fens- has a mental breakdown. First of all, the world around him is unfair, and he can’t accept inequity; therefore, he shows his violent face which is the effect of mental breakdown. There are several incident about inequity in the movie.
They feared Richard, and some of the white people felt it necessary to act out their racist feelings in order to cover up their fear. White coworkers beat Richard because his boss was kind to him. Richard later had to leave a good job because those racist co-workers would “kill” him. When the principal at Richard’s school had asked Richard to give a speech to a large audience of white and black people, Richard refused to read the principal’s prepared speech. By reading the principal’s speech, Richard was saying what the white power wanted him to say and to Richard this would be giving in to the very thing he hated so much.
Schizophrenia in A Beautiful Mind Imagine what it would feel like to find out that everything around you, the people you know, and all your memories you have shared with them, were not real. This is exactly what John Nash discovered in the movie A Beautiful Mind, after a psychiatrist informed him he has the rare mental disorder called schizophrenia. Although at the beginning of the movie, Nash's mental illness was unknown to views, he showed many symptoms of this condition. I will also speculate on the etiology or cause of his psychosis, the treatment provided to him, and his prognosis as well. The symptoms of schizophrenia are divided into three groups, which include positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and disorganized symptoms.
Stigma is the product of superstition, old belief systems, lack of knowledge and empathy, and the sustained distortion by the media. Television or movie characters with aggressive and dangerous behaviors are associated with mental illnesses; "psychos” are killers in popular movies and terms like "lunatic" or "crazy" are often used to joke about the mentally ill. These representations and the use of discriminatory language distort the public’s view and reinforce inaccuracies about mental illness. Thus, educating the public and the media about mental illness is a first step to combat the stigma. In fact, twenty percent of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness during their lifetime.
Also in this movie we are able to see how the illness affects not only John, but also the family and other persons involved. Mental disorders and the people who live with them are often portrayed in the media very inaccurately. Most mentally ill characters are portrayed as dangerous and violent inviduals, when in reality this isn’t the truth. And unfortunately as a result society has formed these negative stereotypes of the mentally ill. Fortunately, “A Beautiful Mind” accurately portrays schizophrenia, and rather than portraying John Nash as a “monster”, the movie shows the viewers the very real and human side of John Nash. Viewers are able to see John for more than just his illness, but for the very intelligent man he his.
The sentence to be fair involves taking those things into account. But inevitably there is criticism. It is hard to get media coverage of the circumstances of the accused. The public does not want to know. The public is hard.” From that it can be seen that the public is bias towards the circumstances of the supposed victim and wants the accused punished without any regard to their situation.
The critics of video games demanded that stricter controls such as American gun control the media then swept up the story and labelled video games “murder simulators”. But time has shown us that the individuals in this massacre, and in other incidents of shooting sprees, the purpatrators were wither victims of abuse at the hands of adults, were mentally disturbed or were the victims of extensive alienation and abuse at the hands of their peers. I believe that these events could have been avoided with intervention from the school or the family who should have seen the degeneration in the persons attitudes. Critics claim that violence breeds violence. So why is it only video games that take the blame.
When I watch tv I constantly see celebrities swearing and doing bad or inappropriate things. I think to yourself why do people look up to those celebs? Well it seems to me most celebrities get into these habits because they are too involved in fame and fortune. These people aren’t the ones you would want your children looking up to. They are giving young people unhealthy images of themselves. So today i'm talking to you about should celebrities be role models. So what is a role model?
