Frethorne’s time as a servant was so brutal that he believed he would have been better off living life as a crippled beggar in his hometown of England rather than being a servant in the New World (Lauter 289). From Frethorne’s letters you can deeply feel the true pain and suffering he went through on a daily basis and you learn how much he begged and wished for his family to help him be back with them again in England. Simply, Frethorne’s experience as an indentured servant in the New World was unpleasant. His life during this time was rough due to elements, including: scarcity of food, weakness of the body, and loss of hope for a better life. During this time in the New World the demand for food was incredibly high, and only the wealthy were the ones lucky enough to get a real meal each day (Kupperman).
Mother Nature wrought her fury upon the poor farmer; through grasshoppers, floods, and droughts. But farmers placed the blame of their problems on two key areas: the money supply and the railroads. Deflation became a major problem in the 1800s for famers. Suffering more and more losses, year after year, many farmers were forced into foreclosure by their “Eastern Master (Doc D).” The main reason farmers were blaming this “Eastern Master” was that no one seemed to be aiding them in their plight apart from certain specific institutions, such as the Populist Party and the Grange. So they naturally turned to the Populist Party, who felt that silver was the answer, and the refusal to coin it a “vast conspiracy against mankind” across “two continents” and subsequently supported legislation such as The Sherman Silver Purchase Act, and a rebuke of the Coinage Act of 1873 (Doc A).
The strong were the ones who caught the eyes of employers, and the strong were the ones who were able to provide for their family and move up in the world. The book shows many examples of the weak dying or falling into a horrible world of drugs, crime, and completely breaking. The only ones who survive in the world of competitive jobs are the
Even though Jacob Riis was poor prior to this, Jacob believed the the poor were powerless in society and that he had the power to help them by using this his journalistic skills to communicate this to the public. He wasn’t very sympathetic towards the poor. He constantly argued that the "poor were the victims rather than the makers of their fate" (spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk). Jacob Riis says that the poor are so powerless in society that they don’t even have control over their own fate, they are victims of it. When he got more and more involved with the tribune during these times as a police reporter, Riis worked and wrote about the some of the most dangerous slums of the city.
He wanted programs which minimized the differences between the rich and the ones affected by poverty. Under Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, Moynihan did not like the president’s views towards poverty. As the Time magazine suggests, “Moynihan contends that the much ballyhooed effort was oversold, under planned and seriously "flawed" in execution.” It therefore can be understood that Moynihan was involved in all the activities in politics and wanted the good for the poor citizens. His point of view was that the government never really comprehended what community action was all
Swift, however, resists this idea, protesting that "their Flesh was generally tough and lean...and their Taste disagreeable." He then acknowledges a general concern about the vast number of elderly, sick, and handicapped among the poor, who are no more able to find work than the children. Having been asked to consider how the country could be relieved of that burden, Swift declares himself unworried--these people are dying off fast enough anyway. The proposal draws attention to the self-degradation of the nation as a whole by illustrating it in shockingly literal ways. The idea of fattening up a starving population in order to feed the rich casts a grim judgment on the nature of social relations in Ireland.
Within these two novels both the authors portray to the readers how the lower class struggles to support themselves. In the novel The House of the Spirits, in order to make a living the people of Tres Marias were forced into working in bad conditions with limited workers and a great amount to fix. This shoes that in order for the people of just have a place to live; they all have to abide by the rules that are placed upon them by Estaban Trueba. They do this so that they can gain enough money to just be able to support themselves. This shows all the torment the people of the working class were put through just so they could live.
Theses arte things like food, water and shelter. Sweatshops are internationally recognised as a poor place and area of work, due to the unethical treatment of their employees and the unjust benefits they receive; they have no benefits. Hiring children at young ages and even going a step further and buying children off of parents who are willingly to sell them to work for money to feed them selves. This is happens not that often but when it
The children in the community are treated very poorly and less than everyone else in the town. As the Salem Witch Hunts were essentially started by the children the fact that they were treated as lesser beings contributed to the communities demise. “He (Reverend
Everywhere you go, poverty can be found. There are families living on the streets because they can’t afford a house. A few families are starving and cold because they lost everything they own in this economic depression. The reason is because rich people won’t spend a few of their dollars to help our economic situation while the poor put forth everything they had. I believe that it would be in the world’s best interest if state governments would hire thieves to steal from the rich and give to the poor.
