The Old Man and the Sea Essay by XXXXXX In the old man and the sea, a short novel by Ernest Hemingway I feel by the end of the book that the old man, a great fisherman succeeded in completing his goal to conquer the fish and continue to be a successful fisherman. He caught the most beautiful fish in the sea. He also proved all the other fisherman wrong by getting lucky when many others felt it was impossible. Afterwards he would be able to teach Manolin, his young boy companion very valuable life lessons. But in depth what did the old man truly do? The most beautiful fish in the sea was very large and thus the old man had to go out very far to get him. It was as big, perhaps even bigger than the old man’s ship. The old man wished he could hoist the fish upon his craft although it was too big so he had to lash it alongside the skiff. It was a huge accomplishment for the old man to achieve catching this wonderful creature. The fish as majestic and tough as it was inevitably was caught by the successful old man. In catching this fish and not just going out to see it, the old man also proved something other than just determination. He proved that he had luck to catch the fish despite having the worst of luck for such a long time, unable to catch a fish for more than eighty days. The old man set a big goal and he went out and achieved it. It took him and agonizingly long amount of time to do it but he used his luck and skill to acquire the fish. Afterwards despite losing the fish he loved so dearly the old man got something else to treasure. He
