Final Essay During the past four years people have asked me what I wanted to do for a career after high school. I always had an answer, but I always changed my career path. I have always known that I wanted to go into health care, but I was never sure what field I wanted to go into. I am still not sure what I want to do with the rest of my life, but I think this research has helped me decide. There are two careers in which I find interesting, Obstetric Nursing and Forensic Nursing. Obstetric Nursing An Obstetric Nurse (OB nurse) has many responsibilities when it comes to taking care of a mother and child. An OB nurse helps doctors with the care of pregnant mothers before and after birth. OB nurses usually help with preparing the delivery room, prepping the patients, preparing instruments, caring for a baby immediately after birth, explaining after birth care to new parents, and keeping track of family members and partners who are present before and after the birth.
To become an OB nurse there is certain training that you must go through. An OB nurse has to get an Associate’s Degree (which can be obtained by attending a community college or a vocational technical school) to become a Registered Nurse (RN). A student can also enroll into a university or college that offers a four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Graduates of a BSN program may be able to get better career opportunities. During college a student will have to go through training and do internships within the hospital setting. Students can also become a doula before or after their training. A doula helps support mothers during labor and childbirth, without using any medical support. Doulas can charge anywhere from $200 to $700. An OB nurse who is starting out can make an average of $23 an hour. As an OB nurse gains more experience they can make an average of $27 to
