NVQ LEVEL 2 , UNIT PWSC 21, PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNICATION IN ADULT SOCIAL CARE SETTINGS. 1.1, There are many different reasons why people communicate, some of the main reasons are to express our needs, feelings and emotions. We communicate in order to establish and maintain relationships with others, to give and receive information and instruction, to understand and to be understood, to share knowledge, to give encouragement and to show others that they are valued. 1.2 Effective communication is essential in making sure that all aspects of working in adult social care settings run smoothly and efficiently. Being able to communicate with a service user so that you can understand their needs and that they understand you is very important to ensure proper is being provided and that freedom of choice is being promoted. Effective communication between colleagues and other health care professionals are just as important as this ensures that everyone involved in providing care is fully aware of all relevant information and that the care is being provided is consistent and respectful of the individuals needs and wishes. 1.3 There are many forms of communication not just talking. People also communicate through, facial expressions, body language and gestures, that’s why it is important to observe an individual whilst communicating as only 70-80% of communication is verbal, meaning that you could miss out on a large part of communication if you are not paying attention to the other aspects of communication. Posture is also a good indicator to how a person is feeling. People who are feeling well and cheerful tend to hold their heads high and sit in a relaxed comfortable way. Someone who is tense and nervous, who feels unsure or worried is likely to reflect this in the way they sit or stand.
