Unit 301 Principles of communication in adult social care settings Outcome 1. Understand why effective communication is important in adult social care settings. 1.1 Identify the different reasons people communicate. Reasons why people communicate are to obtain and receive information, to get to know each other and form relationships. In an adult social care setting communication is important to express and share ideas, feelings, needs and wishes and preferences. 1.2 Explain how communication affects relationships in an adult social care setting. Communication can lead to good or poor service within an adult social care setting. Barriers to effective communication could be: - Not understanding or being aware of a persons needs, wishes , beliefs and culture. Such as not understanding/misunderstanding an individuals words such as their slang words – that’s ‘sick’, understanding that it means something bad but due to their culture it means really good. - Not ensuring communication aids, such as hearing aids, are available, switched on or working. - A noisy environment, such as loud TV, closing the door for a private and open conversation. - Not having enough time to listen to a person properly, such as when your in a rush, you must take that time with an individual to listen to them, ensuring your use of non verbal communication – nodding when you understand etc. 3.3 Explain how to overcome barriers to
