Leadership Theory Jodi Barfield Walden University NURS-4020 Section 11, Leadership Competencies in Nursing and Healthcare July 16, 2015 Leadership Theory “A leader is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal” (Sullivan, 2013, p.41). All nurses are leaders regardless of their practice setting. Leadership is acquired, rather than being an innate skill (Laureate Video, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to discuss my leadership assessment, how it applies to my nursing practice, and how my identified strengths show mastery of ANA’s Nursing: Scope and Standard’s of Practice, Standard 12. Assessment Inventory The assessment inventory I chose to complete was the Gallup Strength Finders assessment. My assessment results indicated my top 5 themes are achiever, focus, responsibility, competition, and restorative. Achievers have a great deal of stamina and work hard. They take great satisfaction in staying busy and being productive. Focus theme takes direction well. They follow through on tasks given and are detail oriented. They know how to prioritize to get the job done. Responsibility theme takes ownership of their choices and commitments. If they say they will do it, they will. They are committed to honesty and loyalty. Competition theme measures themselves against the performance of others. They do not settle for second place. They love competing and only first place will do. Restorative theme knows how to adapt. They understand themselves and are good at figuring out problems and what went wrong, and know how to fix them. I agree with my assessment. I am hardworking and driven. I tend to do better in a crisis. I am very task oriented know how to get things done timely. I know how to adapt to negative situations and outcomes and am capable of figuring out why something didn’t work and can develop alternative ways
