The Ohio Board of Nursing is an agency of the state government created by the legislature to develop and enforce rules for practice that support the law. The Board is empowered to regulate pre-licensure nursing education programs, proclaim rules for practice, license nurses, and discipline nurses who have been found in violation of nursing law and rules. This independent study gives the nurse information to relate the law and rules to nursing practice in any setting.

Registered and licensed practical nurses are the predominant groups regulated by the board of nursing. According to http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/4723 (2007) via the OBN website,
“Registered nurse” means an individual who holds a current, valid license issued under this chapter that authorizes the practice of nursing as a registered nurse.   “Practice of nursing as a registered nurse” means providing to individuals and groups nursing care requiring specialized knowledge, judgment, and skill derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences. “Licensed practical nurse” means an individual who holds a current, valid license issued under this chapter that authorizes the practice of nursing as a licensed practical nurse. “The practice of nursing as a licensed practical nurse” means providing to individuals and groups nursing care requiring the application of basic knowledge of the biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences at the direction of a licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, chiropractor, or registered nurse.
