Taking a year off between college graduation and graduate school is, at least on the surface, a reasonable recommendation. Extremely good use could be made of such a year. For one thing, resumé building could go on. For example, a student who is interested in child psychology could gain experience in a preschool, job shadow a child psychologist, or work or volunteer in another position that would serve to deepen the student's knowledge or experience of his or her chosen field. One important benefit of such experience is the probable increase in the likelihood of getting a good job once graduate studies have been completed. Such experience may also help the graduate school candidate get into the school of his or her choice.

Another great possibility for the use of a gap year or years is trying out other fields of endeavor. In a world in which it is far more common to switch careers than it was several decades ago, experience of another discipline or field could lead to some valuable self-awareness and building of experience should one's first-choice field not work out at some time in the future.

There are other important possibilities for the use of one year or more between college graduation and the beginning of graduate studies. One of them is simply rest. Some students work so hard during their college years that a year or more off may prove truly regenerative, in mind, body, and spirit. Students who take a break may enter graduate school more emotionally and physically prepared to withstand the academic rigor as well as any attendant psychological strain. In addition to all these good reasons for taking a year or more off, there may be financial realities that dictate the wisdom of working and saving up for the next stage of one's education.

Yet, taking a year off is not, in my mind, an unequivocally good suggestion. Rather, this advice should be situational. For example, those pursuing medical degrees may find that they have already accumulated...
