8. Merchandise Planning and Product Development: Nike’s merchandise planning and product development is set on sustainability, global sourcing and maintaining their Corporate Social Responsibility. Many consumers today of Nike brand products are dedicated customers, some organizations and famous celebrities are brand advocates. The quality of their products aid in retail loyalty, regardless of the retailer price. Having international connections throughout this world aids in the success of the brand. Nike’s merchandise consist of men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes, clothing, gear and customization (Nike, 2013), which are the key products that keep this brand striving. Nike is an international retailer that utilizes 900 different material vendors, and the half century they have achieved a nineteen percent cutback in waste related to the production of footwear (Chapters: Product Development & Materials, 2012). They have jumped on the trend of sustainability of bettering their resources. “To drive sustainability improvements in materials, we focus on the part of the value chain over which we have the most control: product design (Chapters: Product Development & Materials, 2012).” They plan is to break down each step of their process from first design idea to manufacturing product. Improving how the material will be used has been under experimentation for the last seven years. The product, will be double checked once in the design process in the U.S. and then checking on how their vendors are being sustainable. Nike MSI rates the material vendors and materials individually, on the strength incentive of supply company’s ability of becoming more environmentally sustainable.
