INTRODUCTION
From the inception of time man has always had to strive for improvement – better techniques, faster methods, more efficient and effective ways of caring out his activities. Man’s main and only activity according to Odu (2006) is economic activities. This is because as economics has to do with making ends meet with available resources as a result of scarcity, man tries to find ways by making choices, he searches as well as develops techniques that could better improve his chance of survival. Man is on a steady, continuous and progressive quest for economic development. This is his main and only purpose; everything he does is to improve his position and well being in every ramification.
Hawthorne studies are one of such quest for a better economic situation. This paper is a work on the question “evaluate the Hawthorne studies of the Hawthorne studies of Fritz J. Roethlisberger and William Dickson and its relevance in the understanding of contemporary public administration in Nigeria. The Hawthorne studies are actually experiment conducted or carried out from 1927 to 1932 at the Western Electric Hawthorne Works in Chicago. The experiments were conducted by a Harvard Business school professor Elton Mayor. But as the question permits we are looking at thee studies of Felix J. Roethlisberger and Williams Dickson were also part of the Hawthorne studies with Elton Mayor.
